Infertility During the Holidays: Coping With Fertility Grief

The holidays are often described as the happiest time of the year. But for someone experiencing infertility, they can bring an entirely different set of emotions.

Family gatherings, pregnancy announcements, children opening presents, and another year coming to an end can make fertility grief feel especially heavy.

For a fertility coach, understanding these emotional triggers is an important part of supporting clients through infertility during the holidays.

1. Why Fertility Grief Can Feel Heavier During the Holidays

The holiday season is filled with reminders of family.

For someone trying to conceive, that can highlight the difference between the life they're currently living and the one they imagined they'd have.

Seeing pregnant relatives, spending time around children, receiving holiday cards with growing families, or answering questions about having a baby can bring emotions to the surface unexpectedly.

A fertility coach can help clients anticipate these moments and develop strategies for navigating them.

2. The Weight of Another Year Passing

The end of the year can carry its own type of grief.

A client may have started January believing, “This will be the year I get pregnant.”

Instead, they may be ending it after another year of trying to conceive, unsuccessful fertility treatments, pregnancy loss, or unanswered questions.

Fertility support during this time isn't about convincing someone to “stay positive.”

Sometimes the most valuable thing a coach can do is acknowledge that the year didn't turn out the way their client hoped.

3. Make Space for Complicated Emotions

Someone can love their family and still dread a gathering.

They can be happy about someone else's pregnancy and heartbroken about their own fertility journey.

They can feel grateful for what they have while grieving what they don't.

These emotions don't have to cancel each other out.

Through fertility coaching, clients can have a space to process those feelings without judgment or pressure to immediately find the positive side.

4. Help Clients Let Go of Holiday Expectations

Clients may feel pressure to attend every gathering, maintain traditions, buy gifts, socialize, and appear happy throughout the season.

But navigating infertility may mean doing things differently this year.

Encourage clients to consider what actually feels manageable. That could mean declining an invitation, shortening a visit, creating a new tradition with their partner, stepping away from social media, or simply allowing themselves more time to rest.

There is no requirement to experience the holidays the way everyone else expects.

5. Know When a Client Needs Additional Support

A fertility coach can provide emotional support, education, coping strategies, and a safe place to talk, but coaching has boundaries.

If a client's grief is significantly affecting their daily functioning or they need mental health support beyond a coach's scope of practice, helping them connect with an appropriate mental health professional is an important part of responsible fertility coaching.

Knowing when to provide support and when to refer is one of the most valuable skills a fertility coach can develop.
